Your Template for Success with Andy Miller This is Bob Bloom, coming to you live from Toronto, Canada.
Today is Thursday May 13, 2010. We are here every Thursday at 1:00pm eastern time to talk about Joomla ecommerce.
Joe Sonne, one of my Round Table guests, is here with me to talk to Andy Miller of RocketTheme.com. Andy, how are you? Joe, how are you today!
Andy, thank you for being here today.
Andy was at the Chicago CMS Expo earlier this month. How was your session on "Joomla Templating with Gantry"?
The cmsexpo.net site describes Gantry as a "platform for building and extending Joomla templates. Using Gantry simplifies the 'concept to realization' process. Gantry delivers limitless design possibilities".
What does "extending Joomla templates" mean?
Does Gantry render sites for the iPhone and other mobile devices?
Will RocketTheme release templates for the administrator, for use on mobile devices?
Google has announced that it will start measuring speed of websites to rank them. In general templates have become a lot richer in functionality and thus also bulkier and slower. Is this something you are thinking about?
What is your next step? How does that next step fit into the features offered through Joomla 1.6 for example? Are you looking forward to joomla 1.6 and for what reasons? How do you think html5 and css3 will impact RocketTheme?
What are the differences or benefits between all of the grid frameworks that are basis for a lot of the template frameworks like 960 framework over Blueprint - is it familiarity that dictates the choice or are there some differences that should be noted? Why did RT pick the 960 framework for Gantry?
A year ago, you release the Mynxx Template with Virtuemart customizations. You did a terrific job with that template (including creating your own modules such as the Virtuemart scroller). How does your Gantry Template Framework help create templates specifically for Tienda.
Where do you draw the line between Joomla frameworks and template frameworks -- is Gantry compensating for deficiencies in the core and wouldn't it make more sense to fix that instead?
Andy Miller, thank you for being here.
Next Thursday I answer deep burning questions in my show titled "Bed, Migration, and Beyond", with another Round Table guest, Derek Heck.
See you next week!
